Take Action Thursday: Help End Homelessness in NYC

Did you know that there are only 4,000 youth shelter beds in the United States, yet as many as 500,000 unaccompanied youth experience homelessness each year? That means that currently, there is only ONE bed for every 125 young people living without a home (National Coalition for the Homeless). Given this abundance of homeless youth, it is impossible for organizations to keep up with the amount of time and manpower needed to help these kids and young adults with just hired staff. They rely heavily on volunteers to help and make a difference!

This Take Action Thursday, volunteer to help end homelessness in NYC! Here are a few different resources to get involved:

  • NYC Rescue Mission
“Providing spiritual hope, food, shelter, and clothing to the needy of NYC since 1872.”
  • New York Cares
“Volunteers provide crucial services in every borough. Start giving back in your community and make a difference.”
  • Ali Forney Center
“The Ali Forney Center is the largest and most comprehensive program in the nation dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless LGBTQ youth.”
  • National Coalition for the Homeless
“There are lots of great organizations working to help prevent and end homelessness and hunger across the country. Search NCH’s Directory of Member and Advocacy programs.”
