SUMMER YOUTH TRANSITION PROGRAM 2012

This program supports teenagers 14 –18 years of age who are visually impaired. The participants are provided with opportunities for personal growth and increased self sufficiency with daytime activities that refine independent living skills, and evening activities that provide social and recreational interaction with their sited peers.  This year’s program will take place from July 9th through August 3rd, 2012. There are two programs in our Summer Youth Transition Program, the Special Needs Program and The Columbia Program. The Columbia Program includes a daytime and an evening session.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

THE SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM – Volunteers will assist program instructors with all rehabilitation and recreational activities for teens that have multiple disabilities including blindness or visual impairment. They will provide support for specific classes or by escorting students on field trips in the neighborhood.

THE COLUMBIA DAYTIME PROGRAM – Volunteers will assist program instructors with all rehabilitation and recreational activities for teens that are blind or visually impaired. They will provide support for specific classes or by escorting students on field trips in the neighborhood.

THE COLUMBIA EVENING PROGRAM – Volunteers will assist youth counselors and teens with active recreational activities, field trips and rehabilitation activities including laundry and meal preparation.

Qualifications:  Open mind, flexibility and positive attitude preferred; Experience with people with disabilities preferred; Prior experience as a caregiver for teens or children preferred; Not required but preferred- Bilingual Spanish/English would be great as well as some sighted guide training! The minimum time commitment we request from volunteers is one day per week for an entire shift for each week of July.

Attention:  Volunteers for the Columbia Day or Evening Program must be 18 or older. If you are a first time Lighthouse volunteer an interview will be required. Please reserve the date for the SYTP orientation on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 9:30- 12:30 or Thursday, June 28, 2012 5:30 – 8:30 pm for a mandatory informational session and orientation for all volunteers.
