Higher Education Lobby Day in Albany – Tuesday, February 12th

Join 15 students from Pace and hundreds of students from across the state for Higher Education Lobby Day on Tuesday, February 12th, a day of lobbying your elected officials to urge them to maintain state financial aid budgets.  For many, it is these programs that give them access to an education that they otherwise would not have.  If you attended our D4D on the Road event, this is a great way to put your skills to work!  This event will also count towards the Project Pericles Fellowship.

1.    We will be leaving Pace on February 12th at around 8:00am and returning at around 5:30pm. As always, the CCAR understands that this is a class day, yet for many it is the availability of financial aid that allows them to go to class in the first place.  We ask that you consider talking to your professors about missing class that day in order to represent yourself and your fellow students in Albany.  The CCAR is more than willing to write to/speak to your professor on your behalf if you feel it would help.

2.    At this point proposed NYS budgets have not been unveiled.  There is potential for Financial Aid budget lines to be cut, or be held steady.  Regardless, we will potentially be meeting with 3-4 elected officials from Pace’s district and/or with chairs of Higher Education Committees in the Senate and Assembly.  We will be thanking these legislators for supporting TAP and urging them to increase funding.

3.   Requirements for participation:

a.       Each participant MUST be a New York State resident.  Pace University residence halls count.  Commuters from out of state, as you have learned from your training, won’t hold much sway with New York State legislators.

b.      Please let us know if you personally receive TAP (the New York State Tuition Assistance Program).  Your participation will be particularly effective as you will be able to personally attest to the value of TAP financial aid directly to the legislator.  This is not required, but if you do get TAP, please let us know.

4.    If you have any questions or would like to reserve your spot for this trip, please contact us at ccarplv@pace.edu(PLV) or ccarny@pace.edu (NYC) ASAP with your name, email, phone, and zip code (where you registered to vote) and confirm that you live in New York State/Receive TAP if you are interested in attending.
